I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve visited Paris. And to list my favourite things might end up being a very long list. But it would be fair to say that some of the most strikingly unique experiences I’ve had, have been in Paris.

A Unique Experience in Paris

About 10 years ago, I visited the infamous atelier of Jim Haynes, a US-born figure in the British ‘underground’, author, founder of a few counter-culture magazines, university lecturer… and founder of Sunday Dinner.

In the late 1970s, Jim starting having people over to his Paris apartment for dinner. His housemate at the time would cook for everyone. After that time guest chefs from around the world cooked for his guests. This event continued for decades with many many interesting people attending, including some known names like Yoko Ono.

When I first visited, I told Jim that this is something I want to do. Similarly have people over to my house to host dinner parties and have meaningful gatherings. After that, he signed his book to me “Francesca, Here’s to your atelier – Jim”.

In 2017, I visited again for New Year’s Eve. The next week, which was the first week of January, there was no guest chef to cook. Jim always said someone shows up….and so I put my hand up.

In 2018, I cooked a Mauritian feast for 70 people at Jim Haynes’ famed dinner party in Paris.

Jim Haynes Sunday Dinner in Paris

Francesca and Jim Haynes at Sunday Dinner – 8 January 2018

Borrowing from this Paris experience and making it my own

That was the last time I saw Jim, as he died in 2021.

This regular dinner had been going on for 40 years. Up to 70 people packed into this small apartment, all sharing a meal and conversation. All connecting, sharing and giving in equal measure.

Paris is a place where unique and wonderful things happen. I feel it’s because there is a focus on getting together, connection, good food, and conversation. And magic happens in that space. There is a culture around conversation. I love that.

Finally, in 2021 I held my first atelier – The Gathering.

A dinner party – music concert – spiritual circle event for 10 people in my home.

The timing was right.

I would love to invite you to join me.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to take time to nourish myself in a really intentional way and connect to parts of myself I often lose sight of in my current day-to-day life. It was so nourishing and lovely to be able to eat such delicious food that you had prepared in joy and love – it is such a precious experience.– Mik
